My Child & I

Here's some of recent quips of the boys

1) Family having dinner at a Fine Dining place.

Firstborn : "Amma, instead of a 'surprise party' for my birthday could you bring me here again as a surprise?"

2) Mom's brother and SIL welcomed a baby girl.

Mom (excitedly): " Uncle C had a baby girl!!!"

Secondborn (matter-of-fact voice) : "  Uncle C had the baby? I thought Aunt D was the one who had the baby tummy?"

Mom: " You're right! The baby came out of Aunty's tummy"

Firstborn: " Do they get to choose whether it's a boy or girl before the baby comes out?"

Secondborn: " How can you choose? There's only one button to press- The belly button!"

3) Firstborn sneezes like 10 times in a row one night. Next morning:

Mom : " Yours cold is back- drink warm water. You were sneezing so loud that you woke me up and the girl next door"

Secondborn (helping) : " And the boys on the road"

Green Bazaar: The #DIYLifeHacks Edition

Today, we are a generation that gets by with help and a click: We are atleast 10 hops away from the person who grows our food, we shop online and do cash on delivery, we embrace ready-to-wear and dig plug-and-play, we get a lot of everyday help with everyday living, even temple rituals are a swipe away! Modern living leaves most of us with close to no opportunity to experience, even on a whim, the richness of doing something with our own hands.

At The Alternative, we are starting 2014 with an edition of the Green Bazaar edition that says DO in capital, bold and a few exclamation marks following. We are saying - D.I.Y if you truly want to learn something and get to the heart of it.

Join us on Jan 26th, at the Green Bazaar #DIYLifeHacks edition, where we are assembling the most eclectic DIY congregation in town to get you to jumpstart with the small things: from maintaining your bike and fixing leaky taps to teaching you to grow your own food right in your backyard. The edition is moving this month to the green lawns of the sustainable TERI campus and features more of your favourite sustainable goodie providers, exciting workshops for kids, storytelling sessions, good food and awesome conversations.

Featuring in The Green Bazaar, January Edition: Recycled/Upcycled Products, Energy Efficiency Solutions, Traditional Handcrafted Products, Indian Children's Books, Handmade Toys, Organic Food, Eco-friendly Home Accessories and Gardening Tools.

Kid's Corner: Children's Storytelling sessions, Make your own Paper Products, Seedball creation, Art out of Waste, traditional Indian games, Origami art, a dedicated LEGO corner and more.

Food Stalls featuring Handmade Delicious Bakes, Vegan Cooking, Organic Indian Food, Healthy Snacks and drinks.

Most things that are worth doing are worth doing, we say!

Spend a fun, colourful, refreshing and earth-friendly Sunday at The Green Bazaar on January 26th, 2014, from 10 am to 7 pm at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) Lawns, Domlur, Bangalore - 560025.

The Green Bazaar makes everyday conscious living possible by bringing together, under one roof, a whole variety of sustainable products, workshops and activities that can power your home and regular life.

Vegan Bengaluru Monthly Potluck - 25th Jan 2014

We will be meeting on 25 Jan 2014 (saturday) between 2:00 to 2:30 PM pm at Rani Park (lawn across the road from the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, behind the Victoria statue, near the MG Road/Kasturba Road junction) and have the picnic spread there.

After *carefully* reading *all* the details below, if you need further help and would like a contact number to reach us at, please send a private message to ARUN V RANGASAMY and request his number. We request you to send the message a couple of days in advance , so that it is not missed. If you are attending the potluck for the first time, we *strongly* encourage you to do this, so that you don't miss us.

1. *All* are welcome! :) You don’t have to be vegan to attend the potluck. Even if you’re just curious about a vegan lifestyle or interested to learn about veganism you can join us.

2. You *MUST* bring a 100% vegan dish to share. Everyone brings something so it won’t be fair if you walk in empty handed.

3. It would be nice if you bring a vegan dish that is prepared by yourself; however, if you are unable to cook then feel free to carry food which you have purchased.

4. If you’ve purchased the food, then make sure there’s an ingredients list on the package so we can be assured that it is vegan. Particularly if you’re a first time attendee who is not vegan, please don’t expect us to take your word for it that the food you’ve purchased is completely vegan.

5. If you’re unsure about what to bring then the best bet is fresh fruits or fruit juices. Everyone appreciates fruits. :)

6. Please bring plates, glasses, bowls, forks, spoons and serving spoons for yourself. Everyone brings their own.

7. We usually have about 15-20 people attending. Bring enough food for 5-6 people to eat well and that'll be enough.

8. Come, relax, and enjoy the food and conversation!

Looking forward to meeting everyone. :)

You can expect us to be at Rani Park between 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM.

Vegan Bangalore potlucks/meetings happen on the last Saturday of every month.

Banyan Tree presents Splendor of Masters 2014

A specially designed annual festival, Banyan Tree’s Splendor of Masters festival is in its fifth consecutive year. It will feature the best of best combinations as always.

This year keeping with the tradition of featuring the best of best, Banyan Tree has created yet another never before ensemble that is brilliant in content and unparalleled in artistic synergy.

This year Splendor of Masters will feature:
•    Ustad Shujaat Khan (Sitar, New Delhi)
•    Prasanna (Guitar, New York)
•    Phil Mathurano (Drums, New York)
•    Selvaganesh (Kanjira, Chennai)
•    Abhishek Raghuram (Vocal, Chennai)

While these masters represent different musical styles and are very individualistic in terms of their playing techniques, together they simply create magic with their music.
Supporting this endeavour yet again is Kotak Mahindra Bank which has joined hands with Banyan Tree for the fourth consecutive year to present this concert in Mumbai and Bangalore.

Unhurried Walk: Cubbon Park

Bangalore’s history is a tale of two cities - the Indian City (Pete/Pettah) and the European Cantonment with Cubbon Park serving as a bridge between the two.

Join the walk for a leisurely stroll through this verdant lung space as you learn about a Victorian era when people commuted on horseback or on foot and danced in the ballrooms of Parade road. And hear tales of life in this South Indian city while viewing significant landmarks along the way. Get transported to a British era when men wore top hats and memsahibs held parasols.

Lalbagh Flower Show: Jan 2014

Lalbagh Flower Show

17-Jan-2014 to 26-Jan-2014

The 199th flower show at the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, which begins on Friday (17 Jan 2014), is expected to enthrall visitors with fruits and vegetables in the form of floral art.

Huge floral structures of pineapple, mango, banana, coconut, cashew apple and guava — and those of carrot and onion — would come up at the historical Glass House during the ten-day show.

The event, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the department of Horticulture, is being organised under the aegis of Mysore Horticultural Society.

The main attraction will be a vertical garden to be created by the department exclusively for the show. This apart, the Glass House will host different varieties of flowers for decorative purpose as well as for display.

In all, 220 species of flowers and vegetables will be on display during the show. The flowers include Zerbaras, Coranatio, Anthurium, Bromiliares, Petunia, Coxcomb, Seleucia, Helichrysum, etc.

Other attractions at the show will be mushrooms designed in flower. The department has also come up with a logo: an 18-foot tall and six-foot wide floral pillar made of various kinds of flowers, Maheshwar added.

Various companies will take part in the show, displaying floral pots they have grown. The participants have been categorised into government departments, public sector undertakings, private homes and defence sectors.

Replicas of flowersReplicas of the world’s largest flower, Rafflesia arnoldii, and the insectivorous plant, Pitcher, will also be on display at the glass house. Maheshwar said the department intended to provide information about these rare and unusual flowers. Rafflesia arnoldii grows to a diameter of about one meter (three ft) and weighs up to 11 kg (24 lb).

It lives as a parasite on the Tetrastigma vine which grows only in primary (undisturbed) rainforests. On the other hand, the Pitcher plant thrives on insects and smaller mammals.

Demos

Dwindling trees, rising buildings and a burgeoning population may have resulted in Bangalore’s heritage as Garden city, taking a beating. But the Horticulture Department, is making an effort to ensure that gardens continue to grow, despite the space constraints.

Demonstrations of rooftop and terrace gardening will be made by a private company. The Department of Horticulture will also be demonstrating rooftop and terrace gardening of organic fruits and vegetables.

Parking curbsNo vehicles will be allowed inside the Lalbagh. Visitors from the Double Road entrance should park vehicles at the multi-storey parking lot at Shanthinagar and those from the JC Road entrance should park vehicles at BBMP’s multi-storey parking lot on JC Road. Vehicles ferrying schoolchildren can be parked near the parking lot near the tower stone.

Entry fee for children under 12 will be Rs 10 on normal days as well as on holidays. Adults will be charged Rs 40 on normal days and Rs 50 on holidays.
